Fort McHenry National Monument & Historic Shrine

There’s something grounding about standing on the ramparts where Francis Scott Key watched the flag rise in 1814. Fort McHenry sits on its own peninsula just south of downtown, and the drive or rideshare from your BERIC stay takes barely ten minutes — making it an easy half-day trip for guests who want history without the crowds of the Inner Harbor.

The fort itself takes about an hour to explore, with exhibits inside the restored garrison buildings and sweeping harbor views from the star-shaped walls outside. But the real draw for many guests is the surrounding parkland — over 40 acres of walking paths hugging the waterline, perfect for an early morning run or an unhurried evening walk together as the sun sets over the harbor.

It’s especially well-suited to travelling couples looking for a slower, scenic outing, and to healthcare or business travelers who want fresh air and open space after time spent indoors. Go early to beat both the heat and the tour groups, and bring a blanket if you want to linger on the lawn — it’s one of the few Inner Harbor–adjacent spots where quiet is the whole point.
